Tiered link building: what tier 2 is actually for

Tier-2 links point at your links, not your site. The honest case for them is indexation, the anchor plan is inverted, and most of the money spent on them is wasted.

Tier-2 links point at your links, not at your site. That is the whole idea, and almost everything confusing about tiered link building comes from people skipping that sentence.

I sell tier-2 placements and a large share of the gambling work here is exactly that, so read the rest with the appropriate suspicion.

What the layers actually are

Tier 1 is a link to your site. A forum thread, a guest post, a Web 2.0 property, a directory entry.

Tier 2 is a link to that link. Not to your site — to the page your tier-1 link lives on.

Tier 3, where anyone bothers, points at tier 2. In practice this is where the whole thing stops being worth thinking about.

The reason the second layer exists is unglamorous: a page nobody links to is a page Google may never come back to. A forum post on a quiet board can sit uncrawled for months, and an uncrawled link does nothing at all.

In short: tier 2 is plumbing. It makes sure the thing you already paid for gets seen.

The honest case for it, and the dishonest one

Indexation, which is mechanical

A page with inbound links gets crawled. A page with none competes for crawl budget it will not win. Point two or three links at a forum thread and it stops being orphaned.

This is not a theory about authority flow. It is how crawling works, and it is the reason to buy tier 2 at all.

Authority, which is oversold

The pitch is that link equity flows up the chain: tier 3 feeds tier 2, tier 2 feeds tier 1, tier 1 feeds you, and everyone gets rich.

Whatever passes through two hops of low-quality pages is small, and nobody selling tiered packages can show you the arithmetic. Treat any uplift here as a bonus you did not pay for rather than the thing you bought.

Protection, which is folklore

You will read that a buffer layer insulates your site if something goes wrong. It does not. Google evaluates the links pointing at your page; a layer sitting behind them changes nothing about that.

What actually reduces risk is the anchor distribution on tier 1, and that has nothing to do with tiers.

In short: buy tier 2 to get tier 1 crawled. Everything else in the sales pitch is decoration.

The anchor plan inverts

This is the part people get backwards, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

On tier 1 — links pointing at your money page — exact-match anchors are the single most visible artificial pattern available. A profile that is 30% buy casino backlinks reads as bought from across the room. That is where you stay conservative: brand, bare URL, generic, and a small keyword share.

On tier 2, the page receiving the anchor is a forum post or a Web 2.0 property. If you over-optimise it, the worst case is losing a link that cost a few dollars.

So the budget for aggressive anchors belongs here, not there. Most people do the opposite: cautious anchors on the layer nobody can see, reckless anchors on the one that decides their rankings.

Where tier 2 earns its place

PBN posts. A private network only works if its pages get indexed, and by construction nobody links to them naturally. This is the clearest case, and it is most of what gets ordered.

Web 2.0 properties. You control the page, which means you control the anchor, which means it is worth making sure the page exists as far as Google is concerned.

Forum threads on quiet boards. The volume tier this site sells lives on properties nobody polices, which is the same property that makes them slow to get crawled.

Anything you bought and cannot find in Search Console. If a link is not indexed three months on, it is not going to index itself.

Where it is money burnt

Editorial placements on sites with traffic. A guest post on a live blog is crawled on its own schedule. There is nothing for tier 2 to fix.

Links that are already indexed. Check before you buy. This takes one search operator and saves the whole order.

As a substitute for tier 1. Tiers multiply what you have; they do not create it. Twenty tier-2 links behind three tier-1 links is a strange-looking profile and a small one.

At scale, in a fresh profile. A brand-new domain with a deep tier structure and forty referring domains looks precisely like what it is.

In short: the test is whether the tier-1 page would get crawled without help. If it would, you are buying nothing.

How many, and what it should cost

For indexation, one to three tier-2 links per tier-1 link does the job. The page needs to stop being orphaned; it does not need a campaign of its own.

Anyone recommending twenty per link is selling volume rather than a plan, and the arithmetic gives them away: at that ratio the tier-2 spend dwarfs the tier-1 spend, which is backwards for a layer whose only reliable job is plumbing.

Price-wise this is the cheapest work in link building, because the target page does not have to be impressive. Profile links and blog comments are the normal material. The price list has both at the bottom of the range, and the price survey covers what the rest of the market charges for the same thing.

If you are ordering it

Say it is tier 2 up front. The brief is genuinely different:

  • the targets are URLs of your existing links, not your site;
  • the anchors can be exact-match, and should be;
  • the types skew to the cheap end, because the job is existence rather than quality;
  • DR does not matter here in the way it does on tier 1.

A vendor who takes a tier-2 order and runs it like a money-page campaign will give you conservative anchors on pages where conservatism buys nothing, and charge you tier-1 prices for it.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does tiered link building still work?

For getting tier-1 links crawled and indexed, yes, and that is a mechanical effect rather than a theory. For passing meaningful authority up two hops, the evidence is far weaker than the people selling it suggest. Buy it for indexation and treat anything beyond that as a bonus.

How many tier-2 links per tier-1 link?

For indexation, one to three is plenty — the job is to get the page crawled, and a page with three inbound links is no longer orphaned. Anyone recommending twenty per link is selling volume, not a plan.

Can I use exact-match anchors on tier 2?

Yes, and this is the one place it is genuinely low-risk: the page receiving them is a forum post or a Web 2.0 property, not your money page. If it gets over-optimised, you lose a link you paid a few dollars for. Keep your money page on brand and URL anchors and spend the exact-match budget here.

Is tier 2 worth it for editorial links?

Usually not. A guest post on a site with traffic is already crawled regularly, so there is nothing to fix. Tier 2 earns its place on things that would otherwise sit unindexed: PBN posts, Web 2.0 properties, forum threads on quiet boards.

Will tier 2 protect my site from a penalty?

No, and be careful with anyone who implies it. The idea that a buffer layer insulates your site is folklore. What actually reduces risk is the anchor distribution pointing at your money page, which is a tier-1 decision.
